German ex-racing driver Christian Josef Danner was born on April 4, 1958. In 1977, after finishing high school, Danner, the son of automobile safety expert Max Danner, began a career in motor racing. In 1980 Danner competed in the Renault 5 cup, and in 1981 he made the jump to the European Formula Two Championship. Throughout his career in Formula Two, Danner was never further back than second. He finished in the top three a number of times but never took home the trophy. Danner also holds the record for fastest lap on the present layout of the old Nürburgring in Formula Two. In 1985, when the Formula Two competition was renamed the Formula 3000 championship, Danner made the switch. After four victories, Danner was declared the first Formula 3000 champion.

In 1985, Danner debuted with Zakspeed in Formula One. Although he got the green light to race twice, mechanical issues prevented him from crossing the finish line in either. Signing with the small Italian team Osella for 1986, he was let down by the car’s underpowered Alfa Romeo engine and had a hard time making a mark on the competition. Danner gained his first point at the Austrian Grand Prix after failing to complete any of the previous six races he started. Arrows’ powerful BMW turbo engines helped him turn things around.
