Born on October 23, 1956, in Pikeville, Kentucky, to Ruth Ann (Tibbs), a key-punch operator, and David (Yoakam) Yoakam, a gas station owner, Dwight David Yoakam is a country music legend. His family relocated to Columbus, Ohio, shortly after he was born. In high school at Columbus, Ohio’s Northland, he was a member of the school’s Drama Club and performed in several school productions.

In his sophomore year, he participated in the school’s performance of “The Miracle Worker,” in which he portrayed Helen Keller’s brother. After that, he went on to star as Charlie in “Flowers for Algernon” during his junior year. For his senior year performance, he capped off his high school acting career as Richard Bravo in The “Demon Seed.” Dwight relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, in 1977 to pursue a career in music. He was playing a more traditional style of country music, but that was becoming increasingly out of fashion in Nashville at the time. After a short stay, he relocated to California, where he found a more receptive audience.
