Florian Munteanu Bio

He is most remembered for his role as Viktor Drago, the son of former Soviet boxer Ivan Drago, in Creed 2, a sequel to 1985’s Rocky IV. He also starred as Razor Fist in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, a Marvel Cinematic Universe superhero film set in 2021. Munteanu was born in Germany to Romanian parents who emigrated from Romania’s Socialist Republic in 1985. His father is a dermatologist and a former boxer, while his mother is a lawyer. Munteanu grew up in Bogen and then relocated to Munich to study at Hochschule Mittweida, a university of applied sciences. In 2014, he successfully defended his Bachelor of Arts thesis, “Structure and organisation of the sport of boxing in Germany: associations, boxing promotion businesses, federations, management, and marketing in general, with a comparison to the structures applied in the United States.” In Germany, he participated in boxing under the ring name “Big Nasty.” Munteanu made his feature debut in the 2016 German-Romanian film Bogat, which was shot in Munich. In 2018, Sylvester Stallone was looking for a European heavyweight boxer to play Viktor Drago, Ivan Drago’s son, in the sports drama sequel Creed II, and he found him. Stallone discovered Munteanu through online training videos and personally recommended him for the part. Munteanu was 6 ft 4 in (193 cm) tall and weighed around 245 lb (111 kg) at the time, but he had to lose around 20 lb (9.1 kg) for the role.

Munteanu splits his time between Munich and Los Angeles. He is a brand ambassador for Domino’s Pizza and SuperKombat, a Romanian combat organisation. Muscle & Fitness (October 2018) and Men’s Health (November 2018) both featured him on their covers (December 2018). Despite being born and raised in Germany, Munteanu has always identified as a Romanian and speaks the language fluently. Florian Munteanu’s second picture, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is also his second blockbuster. Munteanu has had a rapid climb in Hollywood after switching from boxing to acting, first appearing in 2018’s Creed II as the son of renowned villain Ivan Drago. He’s now one of the central antagonists in a big Marvel film.

Munteanu plays Razor Fist, one of Wenwu’s senior lieutenants in the Ten Rings organisation, in Shang-Chi. He also has a retractable sword linked to his right arm, which is one of the most distinctive weapons seen in the MCU so far. While some aspects of Razor Fist’s persona are faithful to the comics, some are not, and Munteanu spoke with Screen Rant about it all, as well as his upcoming feature, Borderlands.

Screen Rant: Razor Fist is intriguing since he’s a rare supporting villain who survives to appear in a sequel, which is not the case in the comics. In certain legends, he usually dies. Was keeping him alive and giving him a new job in the new Ten Rings organisation always the plan? Munteanu, Florian: That had always been the plan. You know what I’m talking about; comic books are one thing, and movies are another. You don’t always stick to the same routine. With the character, Destin [Daniel Cretton] and I wanted to do something distinctive. So, what was the question in the first place?

Because he usually dies in his comics, I was curious if it was always the intention to keep him alive here. Munteanu, Florian: Oh, yes, that was always the goal, to give him a much bigger part. We’ll see where that takes us. Because this is definitely a Shang-Chi origin narrative, there’s a lot of backstory that hasn’t been told yet.

Your character’s arm has a great weapon attached to it, but it’s detachable. So, in the future, what kind of attachment would you like to see him use? Munteanu, Florian: Something along the lines of a bazooka. Shooting fireballs is a real thing. I have some wild ideas for that, but we’ll see what happens. Creed 2 was your previous film, and now you’re in Shang-Chi – So, what was it like transitioning from a boxing movie to a CGI Marvel movie? Munteanu, Florian: To be honest with you, it was rather different. And I’m not just grateful for the opportunity, but it was a childhood dream of mine to be a part of the MCU – and a long-term desire following Creed. I’ve always said that I want to play a superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some time. I just thought I’d need a little more time, but hey, if the opportunity comes itself, you have to seize it.

You stated that you intended to play a superhero, but now you’re the bad guy. So, who did you want to be as a superhero? Munteanu, Florian: Is it true that I’m a bad guy? Yes, I’ve seen it before. Florian Munteanu: All the way to the end? If you’re talking about the credits, I believe that’s fair. Florian Munteanu: I’m afraid I’m going to have to leave it open. Even so, villains are superheroes; they simply fight for the opposing side, but they are still superheroes. Looking at the duality of it is fascinating. Munteanu, Florian: It’s all about how you look at it from a different angle. Separately, you’ve already appeared in two massive blockbusters and have a third on the coming in Borderlands. Is there any way you could give me an update on that, or on your character?

Florian Munteanu: I mean, the character Krieg is such a fan favourite, and I don’t think [fans] should expect exactly what they saw in the game, or what they are used to seeing in the game. I’ll be bringing both my fighting style and a comedic approach to the character to the table. I believe it will be well received.

I recently spoke with Florian Munteanu about the making of director Destin Daniel Cretton’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which opens in theatres this weekend. As most of you know, the film is about Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), who is lured into the web of the enigmatic Ten Rings organisation and must confront his father Wenwu (Tony Leung) and the past he believed he had left behind. Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Yuen Wah, Ronny Chieng, Zach Cherry, and Dallas Liu all star in Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings.

During the conversation, he discusses what people might be shocked to find about the creation of a major Marvel film, who of his friends and family members were the most ecstatic when they got the news, why he was so impressed with the stunt team in Shang-Chi, and more. Additionally, Munteanu discusses why Eli Roth’s upcoming Borderlands film will not disappoint. Florian Munteanu, a former heavyweight boxer known as “Big Nasty,” exudes an imposing appearance. It’s no surprise that he was cast as the adversary when he transitioned to acting. After starring alongside Michael B. Jordan in Creed II as Viktor Drago, Munteanu is now set to play the villain Razor Fist in Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which will be released later this year. Munteanu, on the other hand, is more than a one-dimensional, one-and-done character. And, as moviegoers will see, he has lofty goals for the future.

I spoke with Florian Munteanu about Shang-Chi, including what it was like working alongside Simu Liu and sharing the screen with Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh.

You’re only in your second major feature film role, and you’ve already turned it into a Marvel flick. What’s it like to be a part of the MCU?Munteanu: It’s a dream that’s come true. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I’ve always wanted to be a superhero since I was a kid, and I believe it’s every little boy’s dream. And now I’m a member of the MCU, which feels both great and incredible.

Were you familiar with your comic book character before? What kind of preparation did you do for the part?Munteanu: To tell you the truth, I wasn’t. Shang-Chi was recognisable to me, but Razor Fist was new to me. Then, unsurprisingly, I began to read comic books. But, soon after, Destin [Daniel Cretton] and I decided to take this character in a different route. I think this guy has a lot more layers than you might think at first glance, and we’ll see what develops with him. How did it feel to fight Simu on-screen? How would you rate his fighting prowess? You had a very amazing battle sequence set on a bus – how would you evaluate his fighting prowess?

Simu is a ninja, Munteanu says. He was weaving in and out of all those poles like a maniac, and the room in the bus was really limited. Everything was so cramped and crowded, and it was difficult to fight in that bus — not just because the space was so limited, but also because there were so many people. We spent over four weeks in there just shooting, and at least another three weeks training and choreographing the entire sequence before that. But, in the end, I believe we developed something very remarkable, and it was well worth the effort.

Was there a sequence in the movie that you remember shooting the most?Munteanu: I feel like when it comes to the climax of every Marvel film, that’s the moment everyone is anticipating. After the bus, I think the scene where the Ten Rings and the troops of Ta-secret Lo’s hamlet collided, and all that happened, was probably the scene that I liked the most.

You’re also collaborating with on-screen giants Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung, as the title of the film suggests. What was it like to collaborate with them, and what did you take away from it?

Munteanu: The first thing I told Michelle Yeoh was that she was in one of my favourite Bond films. I’ll never forget the scene in Tomorrow Never Dies where she was riding a motorcycle with Pierce Brosnan. That was an amazing scene. And, as you pointed out, [she’s] a true legend.

Then there’s Tony Leung, whose name is self-evident. But, even though I knew how wonderful he is, meeting a legend like that in person and being able to experience his performance and aura in person is always something special. I was sitting at that table in the movie, watching him tell a narrative as [his] character, and I completely forgot that I was in front of the camera because I was so enthralled by his performance. So I consider myself really fortunate and honoured to have worked with such giants.
