Gary C. Peters Bio
Gary Peters, full name Gary Charles Peters (born December 1, 1958 in Pontiac, Michigan, United States), is an American politician who was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat in 2014 and began serving as Michigan’s senator the following year. He formerly served in the House of Representatives of the United States of America (2009–15).
Peters’ father served in World War II and met his future wife while stationed in France. Gary was born in Michigan, and the couple settled there. He graduated from Alma College in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in political science, the University of Detroit Mercy in 1984 with a master’s degree in business administration, Wayne State University in 1989 with a law degree, and Michigan State University in 2007 with a master’s degree in philosophy. He married Colleen Ochoa at this time and the pair produced three children.
From 1991 to 1993, Peters served on the Rochester Hills city council. He later served in the United States Naval Reserve (1993–2000, 2001–05) and was stationed in the Persian Gulf on active service. He was elected to the Michigan Senate in 1994 and served from 1995 to 2002, his tenure interrupted by a return to military service following the September 11, 2001 attacks. Peters previously served as Michigan’s lottery commissioner from 2003 to 2007, worked for a number of financial firms, and lectured at a number of universities.
Peters ran for the United States House of Representatives in 2008, defeating a long-serving Republican incumbent in the region’s typically conservative 9th district. He was inaugurated the next year. Peters voted consistently with his party and was an outspoken supporter of President Barack Obama’s programmes, particularly the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Additionally, he was a supporter of minimum wage increases and immigration reform. When Michigan lost a congressional seat as a result of the 2010 census, he ran and won in the normally Democratic 14th district in 2010 and 2012. When Sen. Carl Levin announced his decision not to seek reelection in 2014, Peters ran for and won his seat by a wide margin. The next year, he was elected to the Senate.
The United States Senate is one of the two houses of the United States legislature (Congress), created in 1789 by the Constitution. For six-year periods, each state elects two senators. Around a third of the Senate’s members have terms that expire every two years, earning the chamber the moniker “the house that never dies.”
The Founding Fathers envisioned the Senate as a check on the popularly elected House of Representatives. As a result, each state, regardless of size or population, is represented equally. Additionally, until the Constitution’s Seventeenth Amendment (1913), election to the Senate was indirect, through state legislatures. They are currently directly elected by state voters.
The Senate, along with the House of Representatives, is jointly responsible for all legislative activity in the United States. To be valid, a congressional act must be approved by both houses. The Senate is endowed with significant powers under the Constitution’s “advice and consent” provisions (Article II, section 2): ratification of treaties requires a two-thirds majority of all senators present, while approval of important public appointments, such as cabinet members, ambassadors, and Supreme Court justices, requires a simple majority. Additionally, the Senate adjudicates impeachment proceedings launched in the House of Representatives, with conviction requiring a two-thirds majority.
