Known by his racing nicknames Fisico, Giano, and Fisi, Giancarlo Fisichella (born January 14, 1973) is the captain of the Italian national football team, the Nazionale Piloti. Throughout his F1 career, he has raced for Minardi, Jordan, Benetton, Sauber, Renault, Force India, and Ferrari. Since then, he has competed for AF Corse in sports car competitions, driving a Ferrari 458 GTE. He has won the GT class at the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta and twice in the Le Mans 24 Hour. During the 2010 Formula One season, he was Ferrari’s backup driver. In his career, Fisichella won three Formula One races. His first victory came at the dramatic 2003 Brazilian Grand Prix, which was called off with 15 laps remaining out of safety concerns.
Fisichella was declared the winner after several days of back-and-forth over rules and technicalities, and he picked up his trophy at the next race in an unauthorized ceremony. He replaced fellow Italian Jarno Trulli on the Renault squad and promptly won a race in Australia that same year. After that race, though, his Spanish teammate Fernando Alonso would perform the most of Renault’s winning. Fisichella was a highly regarded driver, but he could not keep up with future champion Alonso and won only one more race after his initial success. Nonetheless, Renault won the 2005 and 2006 Constructors’ Championships thanks in large part to his strong performance.
