After growing up in Miami Springs, Florida, Coulter began his racing career in 1998 at West Coast Kart Track in Naples. While still racing in the Florida WKA Championship series, Coulter expanded his karting horizons in 1999 by competing in the WKA Horstman Gold Cup series. Coulter won nearly 50 races in his first two years of karting, and he ended up taking first place in two different states. Coulter was honored as CJ Marvin Sportsman of the Year in 2000. He took first place at the Summer Nationals in 2005 at the G & J Kartway in Camden, Ohio. He also won the Naples championship for the second year in a row and placed second at the national level in the Briggs Junior heavy and light weight divisions.

He debuted in the Florida FASTRUCK in late 2005, and in his first five races he achieved four top-five results. Coulter started competing in the FASTRUCK Pro series against more seasoned riders in 2006. Coulter won four races in the first eight events of the series, good enough for fourth place overall. In 2007, Coulter entered the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series, where he raced stock cars. He was allowed to run despite failing to qualify for his debut event at USA International Speedway, where he placed in the top 20. In 2007 and 2008, Coulter came to the public’s attention after a string of top-ten finishes at tracks in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, including the 2007 Thanksgiving Classic at Kenly and the Baileys 300 at Martinsville Speedway. Coulter also competed in and placed fourth at the Pro Cup Championship series event held at Iowa Speedway.
