John Dahl, an American filmmaker and writer who was born on December 11, 1956, is well recognised for his contributions to the neo-noir subgenre. Born in Billings, Montana, John Dahl was the second of four kids (his brother is filmmaker Rick Dahl). From his early childhood through his undergraduate years, Dahl lived in and around Montana. According to an interview he gave to Robert K. Elder for the book The Film That Changed My Life, his passion in cinema started when he was seventeen and he watched A Clockwork Orange.

He started his education at MSU, but eventually shifted his focus to the film programme at the university’s School of Cinema and Photography.
