English film and theatre director Stephen Daldry (full name: Stephen David Daldry; born May 2, 1961, Dorset, England) is lauded for his subtle and sympathetic handling of storylines with complex protagonists.Daldry’s father was a bank manager who passed away when his son was 15 years old. Yet, with the help of his cabaret singer mother, Daldry joined a theatre company in Taunton and made up his mind to direct by the time he was 15 years old. After moving back to England, he worked as an apprentice at the Crucible Theatre before becoming creative director of the Metro Theatre Group (1984–86). (1986–88). When serving as artistic director of London’s Gate Theatre (1989–1992), he was a staunch supporter of lesser-known plays by foreign authors; this philosophy was also obvious during his time at the helm of the Royal Court Theatre (1992–98). In 1992, Daldry won a Laurence Olivier Award for directing J.B. Priestley’s An Inspector Calls at the National Theatre, and in 1994, he won a Tony Award for the same production on Broadway. In 1999 he directed the one-man show Via Dolorosa by British writer David Hare, marking his return to Broadway.
