A husband-and-wife duo, American filmmakers Jonathan Dayton (born July 7, 1957) and Valerie Faris (born October 20, 1958) are active in the film and music video industries. They got their start helming music videos for bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Radiohead, and the Smashing Pumpkins. Little Miss Sunshine (2006), Ruby Sparks (2012), and Battle of the Sexes (2013) were all films they co-directed (2017). The director is also responsible for the comedic series Fleishman Is In Trouble (Hulu, 2018) and Netflix’s Living with Yourself (2019).
Dayton grew up in Grass Valley after being born in Alameda County. After graduating from Ygnacio Valley High School in Concord, California in the late 1970s, he enrolled at the UCLA Film School to study film and television, and it was there that he met Valerie Faris, a dance student and native of Los Angeles County, California, who would later become his wife and business partner. They’ve started a family and now there are three of them. Paula Forbes, a supervising painter, and Jim Faris, a film editor, are Valerie’s parents.Dayton and Faris have collaborated on several projects as directors and producers, including music videos, documentaries, advertisements, and films.
