The Cincinnati Reds’ AAA minor league team is the Louisville Bats. They play their home games in Louisville, Kentucky. The International League club was once known as the Louisville RiverBats. Hillerich & Bradsby, manufacturers of the eponymous Louisville Slugger baseball bat, paid for the naming rights to the stadium where the Bats play. Originally based in Springfield, Illinois, the St. Louis Cardinals relocated their American Association Triple-A affiliate, the Redbirds, to Louisville, Kentucky in 1982. There has never been a minor league season with a larger crowd than the 1982 Louisville Redbirds season, which saw nearly 800,000.
The Redbirds broke the minor league attendance record in 1983, with over a million spectators. The American Association ceased operations in 1998, and its member clubs all joined either the International League or the Pacific Coast League. As the league grew, the Cardinals switched their Triple-A affiliation to the Memphis, Tennessee-based, non-profit Memphis Redbirds. From 1998 to 1999, the Louisville Bats were associated with the Milwaukee Brewers, but since 2000, they have been playing for the Cincinnati Reds.

After the Redbirds switched to the Brewers in 1999, they changed their name to the Louisville RiverBats. In 2000, the club relocated to Louisville Slugger Field, a new stadium in downtown Louisville that offered a more personal baseball experience for its 14,000 patrons than its predecessor, Cardinal Stadium.
