In the mid-1990s, Neal McCoy had a series of successes with his style of neo-traditionalist honky tonk. McCoy was born Hubert Neal McGaughey, Jr. to an Irish father and a Filipina mother in Jacksonville, Texas. He began his musical career in gospel choirs but was raised on a wide variety of music. The R&B band was where he first used his deep baritone voice professionally, but he quickly reverted to country music and began performing in clubs and bars around Texas.

In 1981, he triumphed in a talent show where Janie Fricke was in attendance, and it was because to her that he was able to open for Charley Pride on a concert tour. Six years later, in 1988, he released his first single as a solo artist under the name Neal McGoy with the song “That is How Much I Love You”. After making some adjustments to make it more accessible, he released his first album, At This Moment, on Atlantic in 1990 under the new name. Even though McCoy was becoming known for energetic, impromptu live performances, neither that album nor its 1992 follow-up, Where Forever Begins, did very well commercially.
