American film and television director, producer, and choreographer Matthew Diamond (born November 26, 1951) is recognised for helming the hit film Dancemaker. Matthew Diamond is the son of Irwin Diamond and Pearl (née Ziffer) Diamond, and he was born in New York City. He received a bachelor’s degree from City University of New York in 1972 and studied at the city’s prestigious School of Performing Arts. He started his career in the dance world by performing with the Louis Falco Dance Group from 1970 to 1974, Jennifer Muller and the Works from 1975 to 1976, and the Batsheva Dance Company in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1978. From 1979 until 1983, he was the creative director, choreographer, and co-founder of the dance company Diamond, which he also co-founded with Maria Loffredo. In 1983, he was also the opera director for Children’s Free Opera.
The Washington Ballet, the Batsheva Dance Company, and the Bat-Dor Dance Company of Israel were all dance troupes that he choreographed for.
