American retired professional baseball player Matthew John Young was born on August 9, 1958. Young spent eleven years in the major leagues with several organisations, but the Boston Red Sox and the unofficial no-hitter he threw against the Cleveland Indians are what he is most remembered for. Young entered this world in 1958, having been conceived in Pasadena, California. In the 1980 MLB amateur draught, the UCLA Bruin was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the second round. After waiting another three years to make his big league debut, he did so with the Mariners that year and went on to win 11 games over 203+ 1/3 innings while posting a 3.27 ERA, good enough to place him in the top ten in the league.

In the 1983 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, he went the distance for the Mariners, facing Johnny Bench, Darrell Evans, and Pedro Guerrero and keeping them scoreless through eight innings. However, Young was never able to repeat that success, had “Tommy John surgery,” and was eventually traded from the Mariners to the Los Angeles Dodgers and then to the Oakland Athletics in a three-team deal that included the New York Mets. He made an appearance in relief for the Athletics during Game 5 of the 1989 American League Championship Series. When Young became a free agent, he chose to play with the Boston Red Sox.
