The Late Norman Russell Young (February 23, 1946 – April 14, 2021) Though he spent much of his childhood in Colorado, Young can trace his roots back to Long Beach. While attending Jefferson High School in Lakewood, Colorado, with George Grantham, he provided guitar and steel guitar lessons to students as young as 6. At the same time, he was a late-night country music DJ at clubs. There was a time when Young was a member of the legendary Denver psych-rock band Boenzee Cryque. When Young’s friend Miles Thomas joined Buffalo Springfield as their tour manager in the late ’60s, Young was thrilled.

Young was engaged by Richie Furay and Jim Messina to play steel guitar on the Furay song “Kind Woman,” which appeared on Furay and Messina’s farewell album, Last Time Around. After the breakup of the Byrds in 1968, Young joined Furay and Messina to create Poco. The original Poco band also included drummer George Grantham and bassist Randy Meisner. The lineup of the band often changed throughout the years. Young, along with Paul Cotton and Timothy B. Schmit, became Poco’s primary composer when Furay departed the band. Young was an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter best remembered as a member of the seminal country rock and Americana band Poco.
