Mike Krzyzewski, aka Michael William Krzyzewski, aka “Coach K,” is an American college basketball coach best known for leading the Duke University Blue Devils to five national championships and 13 appearances in the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament. During his time as a high school basketball player in Chicago, Krzyzewski spent two years as the league’s leading scorer in the Catholic League. He attended the United States Military Academy (Army) and played under famed coach Bob Knight throughout his college career. Before joining the Army in 1975, Krzyzewski coached in the military for five years with various teams and at the U.S. Military Academy Prep School.

In 1980, he was unexpectedly hired by Knight to coach Duke, where he had a rough start with a total record of 21-34 in his first three seasons. In 1983–1984, though, Krzyzewski’s fourth Duke squad finished 24–10 and started a run of 11 straight seasons with at least 20 wins and NCAA tournament appearances. From 1988 through 1992, he led the Blue Devils to a record-tying five straight Final Four appearances, the second-longest such stretch in NCAA history. Two national titles, in 1991 and 1992, were won throughout the time. The second undefeated winners went 34-2 and spent the whole season as the best team in the nation.
