Jean-Jacques Pierre Gasly, born on February 7, 1996, is a French racing driver who presently represents his country in Formula One. He finished second in both the 2014 Formula Renault 3.5 Series and the 2017 Super Formula Championship in addition to winning the 2016 GP2 Series. In the 2017 Malaysian Grand Prix, he competed in his first Formula One race for Toro Rosso. Although he joined Red Bull Racing for the 2019 season, between the Hungarian and Belgian races, he was demoted and replaced by Alexander Albon from Toro Rosso as Daniil Kvyat’s teammate. Gasly, racing for AlphaTauri, won the 2020 Italian Grand Prix for the first time in his career. Gasly will be driving for the 2023 Alpine team at the Abu Dhabi test following the 2022 season. Gasly was born to parents Jean Jacques Gasly and Pascale in the French city of Rouen. Gasly is the youngest of five siblings, and he has four half brothers: Nicolas Caron and Cyril Caron, from his mother’s first marriage, and Phillipe Gasly and Paul Gasly, from his father’s first marriage.
Gasly comes from a long line of race car drivers. His grandmother was a karting champion, and both his grandpa and father, Jean Jacques, raced in the sport. Jean Jacques himself has raced in karting, endurance racing, and rallying. When his co-driver misread the pace note, his father ‘went off mountain’ and quit rallying. Gasly had his first experience with karting at the local Anneville-Ambourville karting track when he was just six years old. At the age of 13, he left Rouen for Le Mans to pursue his passion for competitive racing. Gasly and Anthoine Hubert grew up together; they began karting together when Gasly was seven years old, attended the same private school, and even shared a house for a while. At an early age, he became acquaintances with future F1 driver Charles Leclerc, and in his early karting days, he was close with Esteban Ocon. When the year 2019 rolled around, he uprooted and settled in Milan. Gasly is trilingual (French, Italian, and English) and even more so fluent in Italian.
