Rachel Maddow Bio

Rachel Anne Maddow audio speaker iconlisten, MAD-oh; born April 1, 1973) is an American television news anchor and producer. Maddow began her career as a radio host in 1999 at WRNX (100.9 FM) in Holyoke, Massachusetts, which was then home to “The Dave in the Morning Show.” She won a contest held by the station to find a new second lead for the show’s main host, Dave Brinnel.

Following her time on WRNX, she hosted Big Breakfast on WRSI in Northampton, Massachusetts, for two years before leaving in 2004 to join the newly formed Air America. She co-hosted Unfiltered with Chuck D (of Public Enemy) and Lizz Winstead (co-creator of The Daily Show) until it was canceled in March 2005.

Two weeks after Unfiltered ended in April 2005, Maddow’s weekday two-hour radio show, The Rachel Maddow Show, began airing; in March 2008, it added a third hour, broadcasting from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. EST, with David Bender filling in the third hour for the call-in section when Maddow was on TV assignment. When Maddow began a nightly MSNBC television program in 2008, the show’s length was reduced to two hours. Maddow returned to the 5:00 a.m. hour-long slot in 2009 after renewing her contract with Air America.

Maddow launched the podcast Bag Man in October 2018, co-produced with MSNBC and centered on the 1973 political scandal involving Vice President Spiro Agnew.  A film adaptation of the podcast has been announced for 2022, with Ben Stiller attached to direct and Lorne Michaels producing, with Maddow serving as an executive producer.  Television Maddow joined the MSNBC show Tucker, hosted by Tucker Carlson, as a regular panelist in June 2005.

She appeared on CNN’s Paula Zahn Now during and after the November 2006 election, and she was also a correspondent for The Advocate Newsmagazine, an LGBT-oriented short-form newsmagazine for Logo derived from The Advocate’s news items. Maddow joined MSNBC as a political analyst in January 2008, and she was a regular panelist on MSNBC’s Race for the White House with David Gregory and MSNBC’s election coverage, as well as a frequent contributor on Countdown with Keith Olbermann.

Maddow served as a substitute host for Countdown with Keith Olbermann in 2008, her first time hosting a program on MSNBC. On-air, Maddow described herself as “nervous.” Keith Olbermann praised her work, and she was rehired to host Countdown the following month. Her show was the most watched news program among people aged 25 to 54. Olbermann ranked Maddow third in his show’s segment “World’s Best Persons” for her success. Maddow filled in for several broadcasts again in July 2008.

Olbermann began to advocate for Maddow’s own show on MSNBC, and he was eventually able to persuade Phil Griffin to give her Dan Abrams’ time slot. Rachel Maddow’s Show The Rachel Maddow Show is the main article. Following its debut, the show frequently surpassed Countdown as the highest-rated show on MSNBC.

Maddow’s show doubled its audience that hour after being on the air for more than a month. Maddow became the first openly gay or lesbian host of a primetime news program in the United States as a result of this show. The show’s first impressions were favorable.

According to Los Angeles Times journalist Matea Gold, Maddow “finds the right formula on MSNBC, and The Guardian, Maddow has become the “star of America’s cable news.”  According to Associated Press columnist David Bauder, she is “Olbermann’s political soul mate,” and the Olbermann-Maddow shows are a “liberal two-hour block.”

Maddow declined to discuss her collegial relationship with Fox News’s Roger Ailes, whom she sought technical advice from, stating that she does not want to discuss it because “I don’t want it to be used by anyone else. He did a nice thing for me, and it was useful because it gave me an advantage over my competitors.” MSNBC surpassed CNN and Fox News in news ratings in mid-May 2017, amid multiple controversies surrounding the Trump administration.

Rolling Stone described her as “America’s wonkiest anchor,” who “cut through the chaos of the Trump administration – and became the most trusted name in news.” According to Maddow, these are “the most serious scandals that any president has ever faced.

Maddow has stated that the goal of her show is to “[i]ncrease the amount of useful information in the world.”  “Don’t pay attention to what they say, focus on what they do… because it’s easier to cover a fast-moving story when you’re not distracted by whatever the White House denials are,” she said of covering the Trump administration.

Maddow frequently begins a broadcast with a lengthy story, sometimes lasting more than 20 minutes, which she has dubbed the “A-block.” This frequently begins with film clips and other media from previous years or decades, which she eventually connects with current events.

She has stated the following about the process: “The only thing that determines whether or not you’re good at this job is whether or not you have something to say when the time comes. Because when that light turns on, you’re going to have to say something… Every single night, every single segment, I want to have something to say that people don’t already know, which makes it difficult to get the process right because that’s all I care about.”
