George Richard Chamberlain was born on 31 March 1934 to Elsa Winnifred and Charles Axiom Chamberlain in Beverly Hills, California. His dad worked as a salesperson, his mother being an actress and a singer. He had a hard upbringing with his dad fighting alcoholism. But the good sportsman, Richard Chamberlain, excelled on the path. In 1952, he graduated from Beverly Hills High School and attended Pomona College. He studied painting and art history at college and graduated with an arts degree in 1956. The turning point in his career was to move to England. He garnered awards for his portrayal in the BBC’s rendition of the ‘Portrait of a Lady’ in 1968. Then he played the character of David Danner in the drama film ‘Petulia,’ directed by Richard Lester. This was his first try in classical British play and it helped him develop a new picture and strengthen his talents in acting. In the 1969 film adaption of “The Madwoman of Challiot,” he was placed opposite Katherine Hepburn. He was also chosen to play ‘Hamlet’ in 1969, for whom he even took vocal coaching. His efforts paid off and he received raw reviews for his excellent portrait from the critics and audiences.
