Roger Wicker, full name Roger Frederick Wicker (born July 5, 1951 in Pontotoc, Mississippi, United States), is an American politician who was appointed to the United States Senate from Mississippi in 2007 as a Republican and was re-elected in 2008. Previously, he served in the United States House of Representatives from 1995 until 2007.
Wicker studied political science and journalism at the University of Mississippi (B.A., 1973) and law at the University of Mississippi (J.D., 1975). He married Gayle Long about that time, and the couple went on to have three children. Wicker joined the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps while in college and was commissioned in the United States Air Force in 1976. After retiring from active duty in 1980 with the rank of captain, he joined the Air Force Reserve, where he retired in 2004 as a lieutenant colonel.
Wicker was on the staff of US Representative Trent Lott from 1980 to 1982. He then worked in Tupelo, Mississippi, as a public attorney and judge pro tempore before being elected to the Mississippi State Senate in 1987. While serving in the legislature from 1988 to 1994, he also worked in private law practise. Wicker was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1994 and into office the following year. Wicker was appointed to replace Lott’s vacancy in the United States Senate in 2007. He won a special Senate election the following year. Wicker was elected chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee in 2015.
Wicker held a highly conservative stance on a number of topics during his time in Congress, most notably abortion. He offered legislation to overturn Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision legalising abortion in the United States, and he sponsored a bill prohibiting taxpayer-funded abortions. Wicker was also financially conservative, supporting President George W. Bush’s tax cuts. He backed both the Afghanistan and Iraq wars in international policy. He was the sole senator to vote against a legislative amendment in 2015 that said that “climate change is not a hoax.”
