Petrus Antonius Laurentius ‘Pierre’ Kartner was a Dutch songwriter, singer, and performer who went by the stage name Vader Abraham (‘Father Abraham’), performing a repertoire that included popular Dutch Carnaval and levenslied (‘life song’) songs as well as music that can be seen as the Dutch equivalent of the German Schlager tradition. Kartner penned a number of other artists’ perennial Dutch hits, such as “Huilen is voor jou te laat” (1970) by Corry & de Rekels and “Manuela” (1973) by Jacques Herb (1972).

Kartner’s breakthrough came in 1971 with the smash single “Vader Abraham had zeven zonen,” which he performed as Vader Abraham. His 1970s were filled with a string of Dutch hits. ‘Het Smurfenlied’ (1977), a cheerful sing-along featuring the now-iconic cartoon characters the Smurfs, is his most well-known song. The song was a huge success all over the globe and was translated into dozens of languages, with combined sales of over 25 million copies.

His arguably most renowned song was published in late 1975: ‘In ‘t kleine café aan de haven’, about a little old tavern near the port. The song, originally titled “The Red Rose Café,” became famous after being recorded by international superstars including Mireille Matthieu, Demis Roussos, and Engelbert Humperdinck.
