Former American stock car racing driver Virgil Earnest “Ernie” Irvan (born January 13, 1959), also known as Swervin’ Irvan. He crashed during practice at Michigan in 1994, severely injuring his skull and giving him a 10% chance of life; he came back from that to become a NASCAR legend. Irvan has been recognized as one of NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers and has been inducted into many halls of fame. He had many injuries in the late 1990s, leading him to call it quits in 1999. Irvan, at nine years old, started out in auto racing by driving karts in California in 1968.
At the young age of 15, he had already taken home the California Championship. In the 1974 national kart championship races, Irvan placed second overall in his division. At the age of 16, Irvan made the transition to stock cars in 1975 at Stockton 99 Speedway, where he won his first asphalt race in a semi-main event. From that point on until 1981, Irvan competed in and won multiple main events in the weekend races held in Madera and Stockton, California. He skipped out on his high school graduation to compete in a race in Riverside, California. Tragically, a few months before he was set to test for Winston Cup, he lost his closest buddy Tim Williamson in a racing accident at Riverside. Irvan packed his life into his pickup truck and a handmade trailer in 1982, leaving California for North Carolina with just $700. Irvan, realizing he was becoming low on cash, made a pit stop in Las Vegas and ended up with an extra $200.
