An accomplished racing veteran, Janet Guthrie (born March 7, 1938) made history in 1977 as the first woman to qualify for and participate in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Daytona 500. After failing to make the cut for the 1976 Indianapolis 500, she gave it another go in 1977. Between 1977 and 1979, she entered and competed in three Indy 500s. It was the first time a woman had ever led a lap in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. In the beginning, Guthrie worked for Republic Aviation as an aeronautical engineer; she earned her physics degree from the University of Michigan in 1960. It was in a Jaguar XK140 that Guthrie made her racing debut on the SCCA circuit in 1963; by 1972, she was competing professionally. During her time competing in sports car races, she won two class championships at the prestigious 12 Hours of Sebring.
As the first female driver to enter a NASCAR Winston Cup superspeedway event, Guthrie finished 15th in the 1976 World 600. It turned out that Guthrie would end up running in four more events that year. After qualifying for her maiden Daytona 500 the following year, her car’s engine blew two cylinders with 10 laps to go, dropping her to 12th place. However, she was still named Top Rookie for her outstanding performance in the race. Guthrie eventually went on to race in a total of 33 NASCAR events over the course of four years. Until Danica Patrick’s sixth-place performance in the 2014 Daytona 500, she held the record for best finish by a woman in a NASCAR Cup Series event. In 1977, Guthrie qualified for and raced in the Indianapolis 500 in a car entered by Rolla Vollstedt, but he ultimately finished 29th due to mechanical issues with his vehicle. She went on to participate in two more Indy 500s, the second of which she completed while hiding a broken wrist (sustained two days earlier at a charity tennis tournament) from race officials.
